Bioinformatics at the St. Louis Community College

St. Louis Community College (STLCC) consistently ranks among the top associate degree-awarding institutions in the United States. Recently, Sahil Sethi from Pine Biotech and an intern Megha Shah visited STLCC to share our vision of practical bioinformatics education with the students and teachers from St. Louis Community.

Six STLCC biotechnology program graduates attended the “Pizza with Professionals” luncheon to share their insights and experiences about STLCC biotech programs and discuss their careers. Educators were amazed at excitement and storytelling from STLCC graduates, how they navigated their career pathways, the challenges they faced along the way, and the skill set takeaways necessary to jump-start this amazing career path.

At the end of day 3, science educators were given a brief introduction to bioinformatics late Wednesday afternoon, prepping them for the live hands-on bioinformatics training with Pine Biotech on day 4 of the week-long Bio-Bench Teacher Workshop. Special thanks to two team members, Sahil Sethi (Bioinformatician & Data Engineer) and Megha Shah (Pine Biotech Intern), for visiting our campus in St. Louis to facilitate the onsite bioinformatics training, interacting with educators.

“Since data skills are a key factor in research success and career readiness, we envision bioinformatics becoming an essential part of biology curriculum starting as early as possible.” -Elia Brodsky
